Big Earl's Greasy Eats

6135 E Cave Creek Rd (N Basin Rd)

Cave Creek • (480) 575-7889

“Sometimes you have to consider the ‘fun factor’ when deciding where to eat. Big Earl's is just the place if you want decent basic grub in surroundings that are so entertaining, so unabashedly kitschy, that it is impossible not to love it and want to go back. It's located in a 1950s gas station...transformed into a retro burger joint in March 2006.

“...those willing to throw caution to the wind and live in a simpler time - when carbs weren't evil and grease meant flavor, not fat - will get a big kick out of Big Earl's.”

Ranch House Grille

5618 E Thomas Rd (at N 56th St)

Phoenix • (480) 946-1290

“With its back-to-basics menu and no-frills atmosphere, the Ranch House feels like the family-run cafes and diners of 40 years ago, which is exactly what it is.

“Already, the neighborhood has adopted the place, thanks to the crispy chicken-fried steak, juicy burgers and reasonable prices. Whether you want a simple breakfast, a BLT or a daily special of fried chicken or meatloaf, the Ranch House probably has it -- without the corporate setting. Oh, and breakfast is served all day.”

“A Matchbox-size, 200-square-foot Depression-era diner, renovated back to its Rockwell-esque glory, with a blue interior and red counter. Outside seating also available. Menu is short order with flair.”

Best Of 2008: Best Hangover Breakfast

“Leave it to chef Aaron May from Sol y Sombra to transform a drab former Taco Bell into a hip, vibrant nook that’s part retro greasy spoon and part neighborhood hotspot. Along with breakfast staples like pancakes, omelets, and corned beef hash, the menu has some craveable items that set it apart, from The Over Easy (toasted brioche with spinach, bacon sauce, and egg), to razz cherry scones with honey and crème fraiche. And if you’re into chicken-fried steak, the scrumptious version here will keep you coming back for more.” - Phoenix New Times

Matt's Big Breakfast

801 N 1st St (at E McKinley St)

Phoenix • (602) 254-1074

“This small, crowded breakfast nook has a big, hungry following. Owner Matt Pool’s usually there, slinging a pitcher of orange juice and greeting people who come through the door. The day’s specials are scribbled on a chalkboard behind the counter, where people sit down to a good cup of coffee, fluffy pancakes made from scratch, and heaping plates of eggs scrambled with salami. The busy clatter of silverware punctuates the buzz of conversation coming from a tiny side room, and at tables alongside the restaurant’s large picture windows, guests are in full view of whoever’s waiting outside for a table. Even in the summertime, that could mean a couple dozen people, but quality ingredients and friendly service make it worthwhile.”

Fast Eddie’s Diner

3422 W Glendale Ave (east of N 35th Ave)

Phoenix • (602) 242-2288

“With its red booths and long checkerboard counter, this spot is like some Back to the Future wrinkle in time. Here you can enjoy a strawberry malt, crinkly fries, a Cosmic burger, and a cherry phosphate while pretending Ike is still the prez, poodle skirts are still in fashion, and all’s right with the world…the coolest '50s-style diner in town.” - Phoenix New Times
